Mentoring
with
Arthur L. Mardis
Spiritual
Mentoring is a means of examining life questions, which are,
in their essence, spiritual questions. Through Spiritual Mentoring
an individual enters into a process of self-reflection and
self-understanding with the guidance of a mentor who is neither
a therapist nor psychological counselor. A mentor seeks to
assist an individual to find provisional answers to unresolved
questions and wonderings which may affect every aspect of
life. A mentor has no preconceived agenda. A mentor listens
carefully to the questions and issues presented, and, in collaboration
with an individual, formulates a series of activities to promote
and further the development of his/her inner resources, to
create definitions of spirit and spiritual, and to maintain
movement toward spiritual well-being. The mentor may offer
insights or perspectives in an appropriate and nonjudgmental
manner. Spiritual Mentoring is an open-ended process. After
an agreed upon short series of consultations, it is available
when and as often as needed. Spiritual Mentoring assists and
encourages individuals to discover a spirituality which enables
them to live with a sense of universal connection and support.
Spiritual
Mentoring is useful when persons
- are
reluctant, for any number of reasons, to seek advice and
counsel from previous confidants.
- participate
in alternative healing practices that challenge their belief/spiritual
systems.
- reject
belief systems that fail to provide guidance in their current
experience of living and seek new spiritual resources for
establishing order in their lives.
- find
that the practice of unfamiliar spiritual disciplines creates
uncertainties and questions.
- are
devastated when they find that, after being obedient to
the "good" as prescribed by their beliefs, they have suffered
rather than being rewarded.
- live
by an ethical ideal that they find inadequate as a means
of understanding issues confronting humankind in the 21st
century.
- seek
a spiritual base from which to relate to that which is greater
than themselves.
- Seek
to understand that there is dependable order in the universe.
