The Usui System of Reiki Healing was conceived in Japan in the early 1900's by Mikao Usui, (1865-1926) a Japanese scholar, seeker, teacher, and healer. At the end of a twenty-one day fast at a sacred site, he had a visionary experience of the universal life force which he recognized as reiki, a sacred Japanese concept representing spiritual power.

This vision inspired Mikao Usui to pursue a new direction in his life and to integrate the elements of his vision into a system which promotes healing of body, mind, and spirit. He began to offer healing to his family and friends and then to others who came to him. He devoted the rest of his life both to healing and to teaching in order to disseminate his vision. Through continued observation and experience, he refined the forms, disciplines, and teachings which are still passed from teachers of his system to their students.

Because of cultural, linguistic, and generational differences, persons in the West may not be able to understand fully the nature and details of the system Mikao Usui presented to the world. As the staff of Archedigm, we practice and teach what our teachers taught us. Our teachers have done the same. We observe, we communicate, we learn through our own teaching and practice, and we come to a place of understanding that certain key details of the system have endured the journey from East to West. These details have become the cornerstones of our teaching and practice; and we, as Masters who use Mikao Usui's name and spirit as part of our identity, assume responsibility for how we honor, present, and maintain these traditions.
